Dry Creek Valley Norton Ranch , a benchland vineyard off Lytton Springs Road, is also the location of Peterson Winery. The Norton Ranch Estate vineyard sits a little above the valley floor on the benchland of Dry Creek Valley. The soil at Norton Ranch has a larger percentage of clay and gravel resulting in lower yields of intensely flavored and balanced fruit. Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard , on the western edge of Dry Creek Valley, is 32 acres on the very top of the mountain that I cleared and planted in the 1980s. Great pains were taken to search for the proper varietals and clones to plant in the mineral-rich mountain soil, soil that is the color of rust. Mountain vineyards consistently produce the greatest wines in California. The Bradford Mountain vineyard, elevation 1000 feet, reinforces this statement. Well-drained, red-clay soil, combined with sunny days and cool nights produce small, intensely flavored grapes with a higher acidity and a lower pH than valley fruit. These grapes are picked at a higher sugar to achieve the perfect balance for exceptional wines.
Floodgate Vineyard , is located in the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. Anderson Valley, often compared to the Burgundy region of France, is an exceptional growing region for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In the mid-1980s, I discovered and developed the Floodgate Vineyard property for my partner, Bill Hambrecht. Hand-selecting six Pinot Noir clones and five Chardonnay clones to plant here has guaranteed that the grapes from this property have maximum diversity and quality in clonal selections. Peterson Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are 100% Anderson Valley fruit. The vineyard sits 500 feet above the valley floor on the ridge top at the far west end of Anderson Valley. A perfect southeast exposure causes the days to warm quickly and brings a distinct and recognizable flavor to the grapes. The elevation and cooler climate means late ripening and harvesting. The grapes from Norton Ranch, Bradford Mountain, and Floodgate vineyards are the foundation of Peterson wines. We also receive a small amount of fruit from three other vineyards in Dry Creek Valley. West Vineyard- a hillside vineyard in the southeast corner of Dry Creek Valley, Bernier Vineyard-located on the hillside above Canyon Road in Dry Creek Valley, and Mengali Vineyard-an old vine Carignane vineyard off of Dutcher Creek Road in Dry Creek Valley.
